Saladina Fest: Committed to Art and the Local Community

Saladina Fest was born ten years ago with the aim of transforming the landscape of Can Picafort through art. Its founder, Mallorcan artist Joan Aguiló, was clear from the outset that the festival should bring added value to the town, create connections between the environment, artists, and residents, and celebrate local identity.

Since then, nine successful editions have strengthened the project and, right on schedule, this June Can Picafort has once again been filled with color and creativity. The opening of the 9th edition, which took place on May 30, featured a children’s show, concerts by Juanjo Monserrat and Cabot, and DJ sets by Butxe & Antarctic, alongside the Saladina Market stalls and food trucks.

Throughout the week, artists Ana Langeheldt (Seville), Ernest Zacharevic (Lithuania), Marta Lapeña (Madrid), and Jarus (Canada) transformed four large-scale building facades while living alongside local residents. As Aguiló explained to Travel to Zero, “it is important for them to understand what life is like here in winter, how it changes in summer, and our relationship with the sea.”

In fact, Seville-based artist Ana Langeheldt commented, while working on her mural, that the embat wind had been her main source of inspiration for her intervention at the Can Picafort nursery school. “Saladina is incredible because of both the surroundings and the people involved. From the very beginning, they trusted me as if we had known each other all our lives.”
