ADAA, the Support that Helps Along the Journey
News | 06/06/2025The great charitable work of an association that supports families from the Balearic Islands who need to travel to the mainland for medical treatment.

Some diagnoses can quickly and completely change the lives of patients and their families. Treating an illness often requires leaving home behind—sometimes for an extended period. This can create significant disorientation for families, affecting them psychologically.
Situations like this led to the creation of the Association for Support to the Companion of the Ill in the Balearic Islands (ADAA) in 2003. The family behind this initiative experienced firsthand what it meant to face illness far from home. They decided that no more island families should have to go through this journey alone.
“The ADAA association was born out of necessity. My father-in-law moved to Barcelona due to a serious illness. When he arrived at the hospital, they had nowhere to stay. He found himself in the same situation that many others were facing at the time. Everything became an uphill struggle.”
Mercedes Alvarado, ADAA manager
Support that makes a big difference
ADAA began its solidarity journey with just 16 members. Today, they have over 670: donors, volunteers, organizations, associations, and businesses from both the public and private sectors who spread the word and contribute funds so that the mission of supporting families can continue strong.
In more than 20 years of activity, the association has supported 6.803 families from the Balearic Islands who needed to travel to mainland cities like Barcelona. ADAA regularly collaborates with hospitals such as Vall d’Hebron, Hospital Bellvitge, Hospital Sant Pau, Guttmann Institute, and Hospital Clínic of Barcelona.
ADAA offers 14 shelter apartments, assigned to families free of charge. This ensures a place to stay throughout the entire treatment and also helps ease the financial burden.
ADAA’s vision focuses on the wellbeing of the accompanying families. Its commitment is rooted in human values such as empathy, closeness, and hospitality. The support offered to so many families is managed with transparency and honesty—both towards those receiving help and their supporting members.
20 years of unity between golf and ADAA
Sport has always shown its supportive side. One event that has consistently raised funds for this initiative is the Charity Golf Tournament in favor of ADAA. Since its first edition in 2005, the tournament has brought together golf enthusiasts who want to contribute to the cause.
At Proa Group, we are proud to announce a very special edition—the 20th Proa Group Charity Golf Tournament. The event marks 20 years of history, and we celebrate both its impact and the passion for sport. We will share more details with you soon.

You can make a one-time or recurring donation. The association welcomes anyone interested in volunteering. Business support through solidarity is also very welcome.

“When I found them, they provided me with great help—bureaucratic, psychological, and financial. You go there thinking only about yourself and your problems. But in everything that surrounds you, which is a lot, they are there to help. So I believe I speak for everyone who has been through the association: it is truly a great, great help.
Rosa Vives Cifre, ADAA President
